WHO ARE YOU ?      A Hanna ?

The most ancient spelling of this surname was "DeHannethe." Later  on it
assumed the forms of A'Honnay, A'Hanna, and held to that orthography until
about 1600, when it became simply Hanna. It is thought that all persons bearing
the name Hanna are traceable to a Lowland clan in Scotland, whose Chieftain
had had residence at Sorbie Castle. This clan together with powerful native
families such as the Mackays, McDowells, McClellans and the others were
successful in holding their ground against the Norman invasions.

Many of the Hannas left Scotland, and took up homes in Ireland, and from there
migrated to America. Most of those who came to this country settled first in
Pennsylvania. Alexander Hanna located in Somerset County, where he died in
1809. James Hanna settled in Lancaster County before 1738. He removed from
there to West Virginia and then to Mercer County, Kentucky. John and William
Hanna, brothers, emigrated from the North of Ireland early in the eighteenth
century and settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Thomas Hanna came from
County Moraghan, Ireland, in 1763 and took up his residence in Pennsylvania.
Hannas are now living in Ohio, Indiana, and many Southern and Far Western
States.

The coat of arms here shown is described: "Argent, three roebucks heads
couped azure, cllared or, a bell pendant from each collar. Crest - a cross fitchee
issuing from a crescent sable."
